Fall 2011 & Spring 2012

Internship in Teaching Diverse Learners
Instructor: Dr. Jeff Bale

 

I was enrolled in these courses while doing my teaching internship in Michigan State University's acclaimed College of Education.  These courses provided me with real life experiences in the classroom.  I spent a year in a high school working with a mentor teacher and teaching various levels of French and Spanish.  Twice a month we would meet and discuss different teaching practices, problems and solutions with our fellow interns and instructors. 

Fall 2012

Teaching for Understanding with Technology
Instructors: Jodi Spicer, Emily Stone
 
This was my first course in the Master's of Educational Technology program which introduced me to the importance of technology and online collaboration.  I worked to grow a personal learning network that I continue to use outside of my studies to improve my classroom.  We also explored the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework and how to create lesson plans combining content knowledge, technology and pedagogy.  Lastly, I created a personal growth plan that outlined how I planned to use what I had learned to incorporate technology into my classroom in the future. 

Spring 2013

Adapting Innovative Technologies to Education
Instructor: Sara Beauchamp Hicks, Dr. Leigh Graves Wolf
 
In this course we delved more into how exactly to incorporate technology into the classroom to aid in student understanding.  We created a blog to document our progress on a lesson plan we worked on throughout the semester.  This blog provided us with a way to think back and reflect as we continued to make improvements to our lesson plan.  It also inspired me to use this type of technology to provide my own students with a space to reflect on their learning.  Our final project involved creating a Stand Alone Instructional Resource (StAIR) and posting that onto the web for others to access.
 
 
Applying Educational Technology to Issues of Practice

In CEP 812 we explored ways to solve problems that we come across in our day to day teaching using technology.  For our main project I created a solution to my "Wicked Problem" -teaching grammar in the foreign language classroom- using interactive PowerPoints and activities.  Another topic we tackled was how to change a typical professional development (PD) seminar into a Flipped PD seminar where the learning is online.  Along with a partner, I created a video showcasing how to use Edmodo that teachers could access in their own classrooms on their own time. 
 

Summer 2014

Technology, Teaching, and Learning Across the Curriculum

In this course we focused on affordable and easy ways to incorporate technology into the classroom no matter what the content area may be.  We learned about Open Educational Resources (OERs) that are available to everyone online and even posted our own OER for others to benefit from.  We also discussed the pros and cons of creamy teaching  (the traditional way using textbooks) vs chunky teaching (the newer way incorporating textbooks and technology).  CEP 816 gave me a much closer look at the philosophies behind the integration of technology into the classroom setting and how to incorporate those philosophies into my classroom. 
Teaching Students Online

CEP 820 gave me my first experience with the Flipped Classroom model and I haven't looked back since.  In this course we focused on creating an online classroom using various web builders such as Weebly, Haiku and Coursesites.  For my final project I took a unit from my curriculum and turned it into a Flipped Classroom where my students would learn at home and practice in school using Haiku.  Week by week we would add more to our sites, provide feedback and make adjustments until we had one completed unit at the end of the course. 

Summer 2015

Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings
Instructors: Diana Campbell, Dr. Cary Roseth
 
This course focused on the different ways students learn in the classroom.  We researched a number of learning theories to gain a deeper understanding of different teaching methods we could use in the future to connect with our students.  We examined student understanding and misconceptions by analyzing a student interview to gain better knowledge of how students learn.  In order to showcase what we discovered in an engaging and education format we used multimedia resources such as Audacity, SoundCloud and iMovie.
Capstone in Educational Technology
Instructor: Dr. Matthew Koehler
 
The Capstone course was the culmination of my Master's in Educational Technology (MAET) journey where I showcased everything that I had learned in the past and where I am headed in the future.  Throughout the course, I collaborated with other MAET colleagues in order to create our professional portfolios.  In this portfolio I synthesized the new techniques, skills and technologies I had acquired throughout the program.  My portfolio contains numerous examples of who I am as a professional and can be used in the future to showcase my skills as an educator and a technology enthusiast. 
Approaches to Educational Research
Instructors: Daniel Freer, Emma Nguyen
 
CEP 822 provided me with the opportunity to understand more about the research aspect of education.  As a teacher I use general research I collect from my students to mold the way I teach such as test data, student feedback and formative assessments but I never realized how complex data can really be.  Throughout the course we learned about the different methods of data collection and how to analyze them as well as how to determine the validity of a research project.  For our final project we conducted our very own research project on a topic of our choosing to determine its viability in our classrooms.
